Residue Blues - how long does it take to start seeing the effects of a new shampoo?
Remember the 90s? Justin and Britney? Blockbuster 📽 and the Macarena? You might also recall a major marketing push for anti-residue shampoos - endless commercials on the perils of using the same hair product for too long and the need to reset locks every now and then.
Although the topic has fallen out of heavy commercial rotation, the phenomenon persists. Styling products, conditioners and even shampoos can leave residue on strands. This is because most products contain various thickening agents, fragrances and other ingredients. These additives can coat strands and eventually prevent moisture from reaching hair.
How do you know if you have product build up? Your hair may seem increasingly dull, flat and hard to style with less bounce and shine ✨.
Switching shampoos will naturally remove residue, especially if you choose a product with a pure, all-natural 🌱 formula like T’zikal’s Deep Hydrating Shampoo. However, the change doesn’t happen overnight. It can take several washes to rinse out the old product and start seeing the effects of a new shampoo.
At T’zikal, we recommend using a new shampoo at least five times before judging the results.
In addition, you can incorporate a simple DIY residue treatment to speed along the transition and start to see the bounce and radiance ✨ from your new shampoo sooner.
Apple Cider Vinegar 🍎
👉 Dilute1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of water and rinse after shampoo but before conditioning. It not only removes residue but also balances pH and smoothes hair cuticles.
Note: do not use on color-treated 🎨 hair.
Baking Soda
👉 Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to your daily shampoo portion and mix to a pasty consistency. Then, shampoo normally and follow with an extra hydrating 💦conditioner like T’zikal’s Deep Moisturizing Conditioning Cream to avoid over-drying.
Lemon Juice 🍋
👉 Mix 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice in 3 cups of water and rinse hair after shampooing but before conditioning. Again, do follow the lemon juice rinse with an extra hydrating conditioner like T’zikal’s Deep Moisturizing Conditioning Cream.
Remember, lemon juice can lighten ✨ the color of your hair, so opt for one of the other DIY recipes if you’re spending a lot of time in the sun 🌞 and don’t need extra highlights!
When transitioning to a new shampoo, make sure you’re choosing a product made with natural ingredients that is effective but won’t subject your locks to excessive chemical agents.
