Happy Winter Solstice!
This Saturday is one of the most important days of the year on the Mayan calendar - the Winter Solstice!
Considering the solstice a symbol of renewal that marked the beginning of a new solar year, Great Cycle of time and a resetting of the celestial clock, Mayans would gather at significant ancient sites to celebrate.
🇲🇽 One amazing example is the El Castillo temple at Chichen Itza, where the sun appears to be climbing the structure while it rises. At one point during the day the temple’s northern and eastern walls are completely dark while the southern and western sides are bathed in sunlight.
