Cold Cream, Greece & France
The first iteration of ‘cold cream’ was formulated by Greek physician Galen (150 AD) and contained a mixture of molten beeswax, water and olive oil.
It was a pain to mix and had a limited shelf life, but the basic recipe and usage stuck around for millennia.
Later versions of cold cream included floral oils and more stable ingredients and little by little, the variation we know today was born. The French actually still refer to cold cream as ‘Galen’s Wax'.
